What you need on your CV

  • Full name and photo – If you work in a uniform a photo in the uniform may help.
  • Do not add such things as your family details or religious convictions etc.
  • All the contact details you have – phone number, cell/mobile number, fax, email, any other contact details.
  • Languages you can speak, any professional memberships other general details.
  • Education and professional qualifications – start with the latest at the top give the places you studied and the dates you were there. High/secondary would be further down – put the highest first.
  • Any training courses such as computer courses or other courses – mention if you have been overseas.
  • Next comes what you are expecting in your next position – required salary – when you are available – all your skills. THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN TAILOR YOUR CV FOR A PARTICULAR JOB.
  • For your work experience put the most recent one first, dates started and finished, title, achievements during your time there. The latest jobs should have the most details – once they are say 10 years ago the details can be less. MAKE SURE THE DATES FOLLOW ON if there are dates not covered the future employer would be wondering what you were doing during the missing periods. Your description should show not just what you have done but how you benefitted the company.
  • At the Bottom of your CV put “references available on request”. You do not need to attach these to the CV as these will be needed at the interview or later.

REMEMBER

  • DO A SPELL CHECK and ask some friends to read through it to check the whole CV.
  • THIS IS MARKETING YOURSELF – make it the best you can – it is one of the most important items in getting a job.
  • When you come to print your CV please make sure it is PRINTED ON GOOD QUALITY PAPER by a laser jet or similar high quality printer.
  • THE CV SHOULD BE 2 PAGES LONG – absolute maximum 3 pages – but 2 are much better.
  • TRY BULLET POINTS FOR INFORMATION – it reduces the words and looks good.

  • DOUBLE CHECK ALL THE DATES AND MAKE SURE THEY FOLLOW.
  • When you send the CV – SEND IT WITH A GOOD COVERING LETTER to explain a bit about why you are applying.
